June 17th - September 6th, 2023
Over the last few summers George Spencer has presented numerous outside exhibitions of sculpture at the Garage at Chatham. Exhibitions have been dedicated to sculpture by non-sculptors and sculpture that was constructed so that it would deteriorate over time. Also there was a show of sculpture that had parts that moved or were otherwise unstable and used unusual materials and non traditional techniques. Some or all of the procedures used to create the work were clearly visible. Chance and serendipity were important as was the possibility of multiple ways of displaying, viewing and understanding the work. Also important is the concept (or mis-conception) of completion in an unpredictable and dangerous world.
The Garage at Chatham has exhibited more than 30 artists over the last three years. George Spencer continues to focus on sculptors who are pushing the boundaries of the art form. For example, he has exhibited sculpture made from plumbing materials, from vegetables and from materials left over from the reconstruction of a tavern frequented by George Washington.
The exhibition for the Summer of 2023 is called A Closer Look. On display will be work by 5 sculptors. The five sculptors are Tyrone Mitchell, Steve Rosenzweig, Joe Sultan, Ginnie Peterson, and Ben La Rocco.
The curator, George Spencer, is also a visual artist, writer and producer.
